Supervisory Team:   Dr Sheida Afshan

Project description

The more frequent extreme conditions and the challenges associated with climate change mean that our structures and infrastructure need to be designed to be efficient, resilient, sustainable and capable of meeting the demands of modern society as well as current and future risks.

In this project you will investigate the behaviour and design of steel-framed structures with novel hybrid stainless steel/carbon steel joints as a means of improving their resilience under extreme loading conditions. You will conduct both experimental and numerical modelling research using the state-of-the-art structural and material testing facilities in the new UKCRIC National Infrastructure Laboratory at the University of Southampton. Your PhD research outputs will lead to real structural design guidance rules and potential adoption into standards and practice.

You will be part of a vibrant research group focussed on a range of Structural Engineering challenges and be based in Southampton’s brand new National Infrastructure Laboratory at the Boldrewood Innovation Campus. We will be collaborating with industry and you will receive mentoring and training through the University’s Sustainable Infrastructure for Cities Centre of Doctoral Training.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr Sheida Afshan, Infrastructure Research Group, Email: s.afshan@soton.ac.uk
